TEACHING
TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
In my instruction approach, goals for student learning are twofold: first, students develop academic skills that prepare them for a professional path in psychology and/or other fields. I build classroom activities and assessments to strengthen student's skills in media literacy, oral speaking, presentation development, teamwork, research dissemination, and writing for low and high stakes levels.
In introduction to psychology, students complete a variety of formative assessments through the semester to strengthen a broad spectrum of skills. In upper level courses such as sexual behavior, social psychology, and psychology of gender I target fewer specific skills to build mastery through formative assessment, ending in summative assessments to track growth.
Second, I encourage students to assemble a more nuanced worldview through intersectional feminist, critical, and liberation approaches to psychological research, clinical practice, community engagement/action, and various dissemination techniques (podcasts, blogs, vlogs). I facilitate student experiences in rethinking their own perspectives as a result of their unique positionalities and understanding psychology and its applications through marginalized voices.
